10 Creative Journaling Prompts to Uncover an Inspiring Business Idea

Thinking of starting your own business or freelance career? There are many reasons why people feel called into self-employment, but here’s one that exerts a particular pull on the kinds of big-hearted, high achievers I tend to coach:

Entrepreneurship is a chance to build your perfect world if you’ve never fit in.

Opening up shop and setting out your shingle can be your big chance to finally bring all of yourself to work and make money in really meaningful ways, without compromising your personal values or integrity.

I’ve been a fan of unconventional entrepreneur Derek Sivers ever since I heard him speak at a Digital Nomad Conference in Berlin in 2015 – where the seed of self-employment was first planted in me. In his book “Anything You Want’, he writes:

“Business is not about money. It’s about making dreams come true for others and for yourself. When you make a company, you make a utopia. It’s where you design your perfect world.”

– Derek Sivers

This is a definition of business that resonates with me on a soul level (and perhaps for any INFJs or ENFJs out there). Because entrepreneurship is way too hard, too messy and too all-consuming to do it just to make money.

But when we see business building as an opportunity to realise our vision for a world in which we and all the things we care about can thrive – that’s worth it.

When we consider getting through the hardest parts as a process to creating a utopia; a utopia in which we can spend time doing things that we love alongside people we really believe in – that’s worth it.

Every day, I am so grateful to that younger Imogen who carried the seed Derek Sivers planted in her heart for years, and then decided to leave her job and step off into the unknown to build her own perfect world from scratch.

Trust That You Can Create a Better Life for Yourself Through Your Business

At the beginning, I didn’t know what my business would look like. I didn’t have a vision. I didn’t have clarity. I didn’t have a plan of any kind!

All I had was trust in myself. Trust that I could and would build a better life for myself if I decided to design it from scratch.

So if you’ve ever thought to yourself:

I know there’s a better way of doing this.

Or

I wish more people would think or act like this.

Or

Why is nobody doing anything about this?

Then maybe it’s your turn – your turn to answer the call, step up, and do something about it.

Your Business Is Your Chance to Be and Make the Change That You Want to See in the World

It doesn't matter if what you build is a tiny but powerful one-wo/man band, or a global movement. What matters is that you build something.

But where do you start?

Here are some creative journaling prompts to help you unlock your imagination. The goal of these is to approach the question “what business should I start?” from different perspectives, to try and uncover our deepest motivations, strengths and intuition.
