Seeing Magic | Make Hay While The Sun Shines
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that the arrival of Spring is pure magic. But what is even more magical is remembering that this exact same miracle of transformation happens inside us too all the time.
You Are Nature
As human beings in the modern world, we have a tendency to forget that we are nature. It's not something that exists outside of us or something we go visit on holiday. It is in us and we are in it.
When seasons change around us, there are many changes happening within us too.
For example, we produce more serotonin, the activity hormone, in the spring and summer months, and produce more melatonin, the sleep hormone, in the autumn and winter months.
These hormone levels are directed by how much light is coming into our eyes through our retinas, which tells the pineal gland in our brain how much of the hormone to produce.
As the days get longer or shorter, our own experience of energy is changing within us. It's calibrating to the world outside of us.
We are seasonal beings.
There Is a Right Time for Everything
The phrase, ‘making hay while the sun shines’, was commonly used when most people were working in the fields, cultivating their own food. Making hay while the sun shines is about aligning with these greater forces of energy around us. Align with the sun, the weather, the seasons, the cycles, the light, and the dark. Acknowledge that there are right times and wrong times to do things.
We’re more likely to succeed when we follow what's alive, as opposed to setting arbitrary deadlines according to the calendar – a calendar that has nothing to do with the natural world.
As you observe the changing of the seasons around you, keep in mind that you are part of this transformation.
When we align with these greater forces of energy, we can find so much more ease and acceptance in life.
There are times for acting and moving.
And there are times for surrendering.
Like everything else in our universe, seasons follow this pattern of expansion and contraction. Spring begins a new phase of expansion, which peaks at the height of summer. Then comes autumn, and a new phase of contractions follows. In the middle of winter when it appears cold and bleak, what's actually happening under the surface is a million micro processes a day are rewiring. Inside that fertile void, the first seeds of new growth are emerging. Spring. New expansion.
Live the Process
One of the guiding principles I teach my Align + Flow students is to live the process. Love the expansion, surrender to the contraction, and trust that after the contraction comes the potential of a greater expansion again.
To find alignment within ourselves, we must trust in this fundamental truth of our universe: after contraction comes expansion and vice versa.
Our society is governed by toxic productivity, but you are not a machine or a corporation. You are an energy being living in a dynamic, energetic universe.
Align Yourself With the Seasons
As this beautiful pageant of spring begins to unfold around you, I encourage you to see the magic in it.
And every time you find yourself in an inevitable contraction, feeling lackluster, unproductive, or fatigued, remember that this too is an essential part of the process of life. It is from this period of rest, recovery, and inactivity that the seeds of a bright new expansion are forming.
How will you align yourself with the seasons this year?
How will you make hay while the sun shines and rest and recover when it doesn't?
